    Welcome back!

Welcome to this week’s Parkland Post and Happy New Year!  We are so pleased to have our doors (and windows) open once more and that our children have returned for the spring term.  We have such an exciting half term ahead of us and can’t wait to share the work our pupils have been doing from next week onwards.

    Parent forum dates
The next date for our Parent Forum is Thursday 27th January at 9am, we hope you will be able to join us.  We will give feedback on our previous meeting’s discussions, especially around mental wellbeing and our PSHE curriculum as well as having time for a cuppa and a biscuit.  Future dates are at the bottom of the newsletter.

    Mental wellbeing
Following on from our mental wellbeing session for parents with MIND, one of the requests was that there were signposts to a range of support agencies.  The ones listed below are in our local area and are there to provide you with professionals who can help to support you if you feel you need a helping hand or someone to talk to.  We will share different support agencies each week for you to refer to on our newsletter.

    Skillsbuilder task

As part of our Careers Related Programme, our pupils are going to be focusing on the skill of ‘Listening’ over the next few weeks.  To further support this, we will be setting a task which can be done at home each weekend.  This weekend’s task is:
Listen carefully to a song you know well; it might be one of your favourites.  Really concentrate on the lyrics (words).

    • Ask yourself what the song is about?  Why do you like it?  Do the lyrics tell a story?  Which words stand out to you and are memorable?
    • After you have listened to the song, tell someone else about it.  Tell them why you like it.
    • Have a go at explaining what you think the song is about.
    • Can you summarise it or rephrase it?  Maybe you can sing it.
    • Ask them to tell you about one of their favourite songs too.

If you have managed to do this task with your child/ren, tell them to let their class teacher know so they can collect a Parkland Point.
We hope you have a wonderful weekend and we will see you bright and early on Monday morning!

    Published 17/12/21

    This week

Welcome to this week’s Parkland Post; what a week it has been!  It has been wonderful to see so many parents and carers attending our Christmas events – thank you for doing so in such a way that has kept our school community safe.

The Nativity, which was held on Monday and Tuesday, was incredibly special.  All the staff and visitors were impressed at how well each child delivered their lines and how beautifully they all sang – it was impossible not to have those toes tapping!
Our KS2 Carol Service on Wednesday was a delight too.  Rev. Mary Winters joined us and talked to the pupils about gratitude and how we should be thankful for what we have. The children excelled themselves singing in all of our chosen songs and performing sign language in our rendition of Little Donkey. On Wednesday, school looked even more festive as we came in our Christmas jumpers – there were so many different designs and it brought a smile to everyone’s faces!  Our wonderful kitchen team prepared and served a delicious Christmas dinner complete with crackers on the tables and singing of Christmas songs; it was wonderful to see our pupils and staff enjoying themselves so much.

    Remembering Justin Bowman
During our concerts this week, a collection box was available as many parents had asked if they could make a donation towards a memoriam for Justin Bowman who sadly died recently.  The donations will be used for a bench in school in consultation with Justin’s family.  Thank you to all those who have made a donation.  If anyone would still like to make a donation, they can do so via our school office.

    This week

Welcome to this week’s Parkland Post!  As we approach Christmas, we seem to be getting busier and busier; there is definitely a festive buzz as you walk around school.  Our Christmas Tree is now up in the hall and has been decorated with twinkling lights and beautiful baubles – you could say it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

    Y3/4 trip
Yesterday, Years 3 and 4 had a trip to the National Science and Media Museum to support their learning in Science.  They took part in a workshop which investigated sound and had a great time looking round the rest of the museum.  We are so lucky to have such a magnificent museum on our doorstep.

    Learning across school

Mrs Wierzbianski was able to spend time in each of our classes this week to speak to pupils about their learning and to see first hand what they were doing.  In Nursery, they were feeling and looking very festive with lots of different tasks such as creating Christmas cards, dressing up in festive costumes and role-playing.  They were also accessing other areas of continuous provision such as the water tray where the boys were telling Mrs Wierzbianski all about blue whales and other things you might find in cold places.

In Reception, the pupils were writing letters to Father Christmas which they are going to post next week.  Miss Carter was impressed with the quality of independent writing and how well the children are using their phonic knowledge.

In KS1, Year 1 were busy with a whole class phonics session where they were practising the ‘ear’ sound (trigraph) and their handwriting.  Fred was certainly challenging them to some tricky words!

In Year 2, the pupils were busy practising their 2-digit number recognition and working together to partition.  Each partnership showed how well they could succeed together which is one of our Co-op Ways of Being.

Welcome to this week’s Parkland Post, it has been another busy week full of learning and singing as we practise the songs for our nativity and carol concert in a few weeks time!

    Parent Forum Feedback

Yesterday, a team of parents and carers attended our Parent Forum and helped us to produce an action plan linked to mental wellbeing.  There were lots of discussions and it gave us a chance as school staff to find out how you are feeling about what is taught in our curriculum and how we support the mental wellbeing of your children.  We will communicate the action plan as soon as it has been finalised and look forward to having mental wellbeing as an agenda item at every Parent Forum in the future.  We would like to thank all of those parents and carers who came in to support this incredibly important aspect of school life.

Keep an eye on our events page for everything you need to know about the festive period and whats happening in school in the near future.

    This week

Miss Connors began the week delivering an assembly which focused one the this year’s theme ‘One Kind Word’.  She began by asking our pupils what kindness means to them and there were lots of good ideas from them.  Miss Connors then showed images of reminders of how to be kind and asked how we would put this into action across our school.

    Times Tables of the Week
This week, KS2 have been reciting their 8x tables again so they can become more confident with this knowledge.  We have added a ‘bop’ to ensure we all stay together as we call them out.  In KS1, the pupils have been counting forwards in 2s from 20.

    Learning across KS1 this week:
In Year 1, they have been adding and subtracting within 10 and finding a total.  The pupils worked together as a whole class and then worked independently on these calculations.

    This week

Welcome to this week’s Parkland Post.  What an action packed week we have had!

    Cycle Week

It has been Cycle Week and each pupil from Years 2 to 6 has had a cycling session in our playgrounds.  They have learnt how to be safe when cycling, how to look after bikes and have either been scooting or pedalling around having an incredible amount of fun! We would like to thank everyone from ‘Becycling’  for coming in to teach our pupils and we look forward to seeing you later in the academic year.

    Marvellous Maths

Mrs Wierzbianski had an opportunity to visit each class in KS2 this week to speak to pupils about Power Maths, something which we have introduced in school to support our White Rose Maths approach.  Pupils were enthusiastic when talking about their new practice books and the various types of tasks which they complete during each maths session.  It was lovely to see how well the pupils are using concrete resources to give them a deeper understanding of maths concepts such as partitioning.
In the playgrounds this week, our times table focus in KS2 has been the 8 x table and your children are becoming much more confident as each week passes. Please continue to support your child by practising these tables at home as it will soon become second nature.  In KS1, their focus has been counting in 2s from 20 and they have done a great job, again becoming more confident when calling them out.  I know that Miss Anson is thrilled with the positive buzz around school for all things maths!

    Remembrance Day

On Thursday, we came together as a school to remember those who gave our lives for our future.  Miss Connors led the assembly and was impressed by the pupils’ knowledge about remembrance before we observed the two-minute silence.  Members from each class brought examples of poppy wreaths which they had made together and other examples of artwork which look stunning on our display board in the hall.
We hope you enjoy your weekend and we will see you bright and early on Monday morning!

You should have had your parents’ evening letter this week, this year parents’ evening will take place on Monday the 29th November. Monday night will be for face to face appointments. You can opt for a telephone call instead which will mean the teacher will call you during that week after school. Please choose one option if possible. Only people who are attending face to face appointments on Monday will get a letter with a time slot. Phone calls will be made when possible over the next 4 days.

    Miss Moncaster

We are sad to say that Miss Moncaster will be leaving us at Christmas. We know that this will be a big change for both your children and yourselves and we will keep you updated with who will be teaching in Year one in the Spring term. We wish Miss Moncaster all the best.

    This week

Welcome to this week’s Parkland Post at the end of what has been a magnificent start to our school year!

    Attendance
This week, we sent out our green, amber and red letters to show the level of attendance this half term.  It is incredibly important that your child is in school every day and is on time as pupils begin learning as soon as they arrive.

    Covid-19
Please remember to social distance wherever possible over half term and if you begin to display any symptoms, book a PCR test so you can keep all members of our school community safe.
We hope you have a lovely holiday.  Don’t forget that we return on Tuesday 2nd November as we have a training day on Monday 1st November – we can’t wait to see you all for Autumn 2!

    Harvest
We were joined by Rev. Mary Winters for our Harvest Festival who talked about gratitude; what each of us should be thankful for.  Our pupils made us proud with their contributions as they talked about food from around the world, Fairtrade and climate change and the singing was simply beautiful.  Thank you for all of your contributions to our local food bank at Rev Winters’ church; it will help so many families.

    This week’s learning
In assembly on Monday, Mrs Wierzbianski had some volunteers from each class in Years 1-6.  Each class had worked together to create a Learning Charter and decided what their rights, responsibilities were and what consequences and rewards were available to them.  Each volunteer spoke clearly and communicated well with the whole school which can be quite a nerve-wracking experience.  It was a shining example of how we can succeed together which is one of our Co-op Ways of Being.

Welcome to this week’s Parkland Post.  We have had another busy week, our pupils have been impressing Miss Connors with their knowledge as she has been visiting classes.  This week’s Hot Chocolate Friday was fabulous as our pupils love coming and talking about what they have enjoyed most about the week and get to enjoy delicious drinks and biscuits!

    Parents’ Evening
Parents’ Evening will take place next half term, we are going to hold a consultation with you to see how you would like these to take place e.g. in person or a phone call so please watch out for that information in the near future on our Facebook page.

What have we been learning this week?
In Nursery, they have been learning about autumn, collecting pumpkins, creating their own pumpkins with orange playdough, collecting sticks and leaf printing.

In Reception, they have been making story maps of the Rainbow Fish book and creating repeating patterns.

Year 1 have been learning all about maps and keys in their quest to find Beegu which we can now announce has been found safe and well – we are all incredibly relieved!  They have also been labelling parts of the body.  Year 2 have been learning about Henry VIII and his wives as well as reading the book The Lonely Beast.

Years 3 and 4 have been learning about the rainforest and can wow you with facts all about it.

Year 5 have had a fabulous week developing their scientific enquiry skills. They have been learning all about living things and their habitats so they decided to see if they could spot patterns in data, looking at whether there was a correlation between animal size and life expectancy. Guess what? Normally, the larger the animal, the longer it lives, except for turtles which can live up to 150 years!

Finally, in Year 6, they have been closely observing mouldy bread (yes, you heard that correctly, observing mouldy bread) as part of their science work where they were focusing on fungi and its importance in our world.
We hope you have an amazing weekend and we will see you bright and early on Monday morning to begin our final week of this half term.

    This week

Welcome to this week’s Parkland Post!  We hope you are all well and that no-one blew away earlier this week – autumn was most certainly here and now it’s looking like we might be having another glorious weekend; it’s impossible to keep up!

Story writing in Years 3 and 4
Years 3 and 4 have been story writing this week based on the Visual Literacy short film ‘Lou’.  So far, they have written an opening and a problem ensuring they use fronted adverbials and that the vocabulary they use is of a high standard.  Mrs Wierzbianski has read a few pieces of work and is impressed with their writing so far – she can’t wait to read the final pieces!

    Your Governing Body
This week, Miss Connors met with our Governing Body which was chaired by Miss Emma Ainsworth for this term’s update on the wonderful things happening at Parkland.  We are lucky that our governors are so supportive and are part of our journey of school improvement.  They are all looking forward to meeting you at our events this year.

    Times table of the week
We had a great time reciting our ten times tables in the KS2 playground and counting in 2s in the KS1 playground.  Next week, we will be focusing on the 4 times table in KS2 and will be continuing to count forwards in 2s in KS1.  You could help your child become more confident at home with their times tables by reciting them together.

We hope you have a fabulous weekend, whatever you decide to do.  Please try to listen to your child read for 10 minutes per day, help them to practise their spellings and their times tables.  Mrs Wierzbianski will be walking Jet and doing a spot of reading as she’s quite fond of reading you know!  We can’t wait to see all of our pupils bright and early on Monday morning for another week of learning!

    Black History Month

October is Black History Month and pupils in Year 6 have been reading a text called ‘Hidden Figures’  which is the true story of four African-American women who were incredibly gifted mathematicians.  The work they did changed not only their own lives but the face of air and space travel forever.  Year 6 read about the barriers these women kept coming up against and learnt the importance of resilience, self-belief and sheer determination and grit.

    Harvest

This year our Harvest Competition has the theme of Scarecrows, all children from Nursery to Year 6 are encouraged to make, create, build or decorate a scarecrow, be creative!

Our Harvest Festival is taking place on Friday 22nd October at 9am.  We are delighted to be able to invite you into school to watch our pupils share songs and information about harvest around the world.  We will also be joined by Rev. Mary Winters and can’t wait to welcome our Parkland family back through our doors.  Please feel free to wear masks if you wish and socially distance wherever possible.

Welcome to this week’s Parkland Post. We have had another busy week which started with Miss Connors who talked to the pupils about our British Value of Democracy and what this looked like at Parkland. Our classes have had their ‘elections’ and our new School Councillors have been voted for. We are looking forward to seeing how our School Council helps to shape everything in our academy.

    Hot Chocolate Friday
Miss Connors met with some pupils from each year group to share a hot chocolate and a chat about how they are settling into the new school year.  She also had the chance to find out about what they have been learning and the new knowledge they have gained which was a very lively conversation!

    Times table of the week
This week, our times table was the 5 x table and by the end of the week, everyone was joining in- even in the drizzle!  Next week, our focus for KS2 will be the 10 x table and in KS1, they will be counting in 2s.  It is wonderful to see how eager our pupils are to join in with Year 6 leading the way!
We hope you enjoy your weekend, remember to encourage your child to practise their times tables, spellings and read for 10 minutes each day as this will help them feel more confident when in school.
